The Lend Lease Act

The Lend Lease Act: Initial Post InstructionsFor the initial post, consider three (3) of the following events:

-Treaty of Versailles
-Rise of fascism, militarism and imperialism
-Failure of the League of Nations
-Hitler and the Nazi Party
-The Lend Lease Act
-Japanese expansion and the bombing of Pearl Harbor

Based on your three selections, choose two (2) of the following and craft a response for your selections:

1. Assess if the United States foreign policy during the 1930s helped to promote World War II. Could the United States have prevented the outbreak of World War II? If so, how? If not, why not?

2. Explain if the United States, despite neutrality, aided the Allies against the Axis powers.

3. Analyze if the use of atomic (nuclear) weapons to defeat enemies in war is a setback for democracy (President Truman’s decision to drop the atom bomb on Japan).

Follow-Up Posts
Compare your selections and analysis of selections with those of your peers. If they chose different events, examine how yours are similar and/or different. If they chose the same events, build on their posts by providing additional information about the events that you have not already noted in your own post.

As a separate paragraph, please respond  to the following post:
“While the United States was struggling with the impacts of the Great Depression in the 1930s, it entered a period of isolation at the same time that fascism and imperialism grew in popularity across the world, particularly in Germany, Italy, and Japan. Even if the US had intervened during the emergence of these countries, it would have had minimal impact on the path of history. Most of the factors that contributed to the emergence of fascism can be traced back to the Treaty of Versaille, in which Germany accepted nearly entire responsibility for the war and incurred huge war debts while losing a significant portion of its land. Those that fought on the winning cause, like as Japan and Italy, received practically nothing in return for their enormous sacrifices. As a result of this, these three countries have grown increasingly military and imperialistic against one another. A body called the League of Nations was already in place to deal with international matters. Their job was to maintain nations at peace, but they were always ineffective and useless. The League of Nations publicly condemned Japan’s takeover of Chinese land in 1931 and 1932 when Japan invaded Manchuria, but did little further. Even when the Emperor of Ethiopia appealed for aid in front of the League, the League of Nations did nothing to stop the Italian invasion of Ethiopia. Overall, America’s involvement would have had little effect on the path of history, which had been determined decades before.

The use of atomic (nuclear) bombs on Japan was not a defeat for democracy, but rather a means of saving millions of lives and bringing an end to a conflict that had already lasted half a decade. Japan was a proud country, and its citizens believed in fighting to the death to protect their homeland. General Marshall projected 31,000 in 30 days after landing in Kyushu in the proposed invasion of Japan known as Operation Downfall, which he discussed with President Truman. The assault, according to Admiral Leahy, would cost 268,000 lives. The overall losses to America, according to Navy Department personnel, would be between 1.7 and 4 million people, with 400,000 to 800,000 dead. According to the same department, up to ten million Japanese people may be killed. This would have shattered America’s foundations and ushered in a period of uncertainty. As a result, the bomb was dropped to demonstrate the gravity of America’s situation.”
