Term Paper:
In addition to the course material and text readings, my objective is for students to obtain an alternative/outside perspective on the functioning and management of teams and groups. This is the focus of the Term Paper. You are free to complete the term paper assignment either solo or with one partner. If you choose to work with a partner, you both get the same grade. By choosing to work with a partner, you assume all risks.
For the Term Paper, students will be assigned to obtain and read one popular press book (i.e. not an academic textbook) focused on group behavior, team leadership, group dynamics, or related topics. After reading the book, students will then construct a critique of the key subject matter, ideas, recommendations, etc. presented, and most importantly, offer a detailed discussion of how these key points may be connected to topics/constructs covered in the course material. A list of possible books you may use for this assignment is provided in this syllabus. You may choose any book on this list. If there is an alternative book you would like to use that you feel may be appropriate, you must inquire with me in advance before using it for your Term Paper.
Your Term Paper must have two components. First, you should provide a summary of the book, roughly two to three pages in length. In this summary, highlight the core ideas of the book. The second component, then, should contain your critique of the book and its core themes, ideas, and recommendations. As noted, for this critique I am particularly interested in your ability to tie concepts presented in your chosen book with course topics/constructs. These may be points of convergence, divergence, or connections you are able to make in another way. This second component should be roughly five to six pages in length. Complete Term Papers should therefore be roughly seven to nine pages, not inclusive of any references or supplemental material you choose to include. Term papers are due at 3:30, Wednesday, May 4th.
