Answer SIX (6) of the following questions. These answers should be much longer, three to four well-written paragraphs for each essay question you select. Your answers must include more detail and organization. Part B is 60% of the exam grade, each essay question is worth 2.5 points each.

Why do social movements develop strategies? What do they hope to accomplish with strategies? What is the need to develop new strategies as opposed to using a previously developed strategy?

Explain the changes in public opinion regarding homosexuality, and what role did these changes play in the advancing of LGBTQ rights? How did ‘equal rights’ as a strategy contribute to the movement and its success?

Explain the relationship between social movements and the media. What is the role of media for social movements? Provide examples and include detail.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the environmental movement? What role did the media-based strategy play? How can environmental movements convert public concern into addressing a major issue such as global warming?

Explain civil disobedience as a tool/strategy used by social movements. Why do social movements choose to use civil disobedience? How has it been useful to social movements, provide examples?

Explain the political institutionalization of social movements. Is this a good thing or a bad thing for social movements? How do patterns of institutionalization develop? Provide examples

Do ‘status politics’ and/or ‘cultural defense’ explain the mobilization of the New Right? How? Are activists opposed to abortion rights and gay rights concerned about broader threats to their status or culture or are they simply acting out of religious or political belief? Explain.

Explain the role of political opportunities in the mobilization of right-wing movements. Has this been successful?

Describe the evolution of protest politics, provide examples. How do movement – countermovement dynamics impact social movements?
