Description: Popular media, such as film, is the site of many interpretations and representations of intercultural communication and relationships. After selecting a film, students will write a paper that analyzes the relationships and key messages of the film from a power-based perspective. Students must thoroughly explain at least one relevant key in connection with the themes of the film. Your paper should use elements and examples from the film to show how is demonstrated between characters, contexts of power, or cultural institutions represented in the film. Your media criticism should end with at least three critical questions about the film.
For the assignment, you may choose one of the following films available either for free or paid streaming.
Iverson (2014) is for free on IMDbTV (you may have to make a free account)
Bend it Like Beckham (2002) is available for streaming on Disney Plus
City of God (2002) is available for streaming on HBO
American Factory (2019) is available for streaming on Netflix
Formal Requirements: Your assignment should be at least 4 full double-spaced pages. Use Times New Roman 12-pt font with 1-inch margins. When referencing the textbook in the body of your assignment, use in-text citations in APA format. Cite the film using APA format as well. Include a Reference List at the end of your assignment with the textbook cited in APA format.
First, select a film and watch it while taking notes.
Brainstorm, using your notes, the most important, striking or notable critical intercultural communication moments of the film (ie. Where characters discuss cultural differences/power differences or where structures of power or dominant/subordinate groups clash in some way)
Consult the textbook or class notes for a relevant critical intercultural communication concept which explains the moments identified in step 2. Note definitions or examples given.
Write the paper, using the following questions to guide you (do not answer in list format, instead, incorporate these answers into paragraph format):
In 2-3 paragraphs, summarize the key elements of the film. Be sure to give details about the main characters and emerging conflicts or developments in the narrative. How did the film resolve? In your summary, explain how different cultural groups are represented.
In the rest of the paper, identify a key concept which was illustrated in the film
Which concept is it? Give a general explanation of the concept and how it relates to intercultural communication, citing the textbook where needed.
Explain which elements of the film are examples of this key concept. Give details from the film and connect the example to the meaning of the key concept.
Which elements of power or structures of power does the film take for granted? Are there historical perspectives which are missing from the film? Why does this occur?
Imagine you are discussing this film with your classmates or other learners interested in critical intercultural communication. As an expert on this film, you pose thought-provoking questions for them to answer. Which critical questions do you have about the film? Provide at least 3.
