(A) Community-Based Research Report: Identify a specific public health problem and a community based organization that addresses this issue. You will be required to research the problem by conducting a literature review to better understand the nature of the problem and approaches for addressing it.
You will interview a community-based professional to enhance your knowledge of the issues and best practices for addressing it. You can complete this report individually, or in a group of 2 or 3 (maximum) classmates. If working individually, you will be responsible for interviewing one (1) provider. If working in a team, the group will be responsible for conducting two (2) interviews. You will need to prepare an interview guide, or brief set of questions, in advance. Consider organizing your paper in the format of a traditional scientific article, and include the following:
– *Optional – Abstract: Brief overview of paper – literature, methods, findings
– Background of the Issue – Public Health Problem Statement & Literature Review – Briefly summarize your chosen topic, describe why you selected it, and include current literature that summarizes/describes the current state of the problem. If the literature is too broad, identify a more focused or specific area of the problem to tackle. Include at least one (1) article from the course readings. Other cited literature should be from peer-reviewed sources.
– Methodological Approach – Community-Based Partner: Describe the organization/agency that address your chosen public health problem, including mission, target populations served, services provided, funding sources; approach to addressing the problem (education, outreach, community organizing, policy; program planning/activities). Use their website or interviews to get an enhanced understanding of their efforts. Include information about your Interview Guide/Questions, your interviewee/s, length of interview and topics addressed. Detail the time, place, length, and atmosphere of the interview.
– Interview Findings – Results: Synthesize the themes or ideas that emerged from your interview/s. Write down key themes discussed by the participants as well as how you felt throughout the course of the interaction. Support your findings with interview quotes.
– Lessons learned – Discussion: Summarize the findings and relevant information from the interview/s and how it ties in with current literature. How do your findings contribute to a larger dialogue about your topic? How do your community partner’s activities, strengths and limitations in addressing the
Public Health topic fit in? What are the implications of your findings? What future questions are left unanswered? Is there anything that surprised you? Something you didn’t expect?
(B) Personal Health Experience Research Report: Identify a specific public health problem and individuals that have a personal experience with this issue. You will be required to research the problem by conducting a literature review to better understand the nature of the problem, how it is addressed, and how it affects personal lives. You will interview individuals with personal experience of the issue (e.g., patients, care-givers, family members) and their experiences addressing it. If working individually, you will be responsible for interviewing two (2) people. If working in a team, each member of the team will be responsible for conducting two (2) interviews. You will need to prepare an interview guide, or brief set of questions, in advance. Consider organizing your paper in the format of a traditional scientific article, and include the following:
