Policy Brief Part 1
Your term paper will be a policy brief, which will be produced individually and due in three parts. The purpose of the paper is to produce a policy brief that will distill the most critical scientific information relevant to a public health problem into a document that is accessible to appropriate policy makers or decision makers. The final document you produce is intended to help policy makers use the best scientific evidence to make policy decisions.

Section A: Public Health Problem (13 pts)
The first assignment will request students to provide a description of the public health problem they are going to be addressing and possible policy objectives. You will use the questions below to provide a problem definition of a public health issue or problem in California. One-page maximum; Times New Roman 12-point font, 1” margins
Please INCLUDE written answers to the following questions:
What is the issue or problem? Why is it important? Why now? What are consequences if not addressed?
Who is impacted? Affected populations and degree of problem facing each population?(You may refer to California Dept. of Public Health or other health data websites suggested in our lectures to obtain data and statistics on any particular topic)
Who has the influence to make a change to address problem? Choose potential primary audience for your policy brief. [g policymakers (and their staff) community leaders (grassroots or grasstops), industry or nongovernmental organization executives]
Potential Policy Recommendation that addresses the problem. Provide at least one recommendation but often 1-3 potential policy actions that will address the problem. (Refer to websites mentioned in lecture and textbook for resources)
You may use each question as a header or write it in essay format. Refer to the course materials (text and articles) for assistance with problem definition.
Section B: Annotated Bibliography (10 pts)
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
You will need to have at least 5 academic citations outside of items on the syllabus. No page minimum; Times New Roman 12-point font, 1” margins
For each reference, please include:
Reference citation in APA-format
Brief annotation (approx. 50-100 words):
What is article/book/etc pertaining to? Summarize main points.
How does this resource relate to the other sources in my bibliography? Is it biased? Is it basic or advanced? Who are the authors and how do they compare with the other authors? Critically analyze your resource and compare it to other resources in your annotated bibliography.
How does this resource help or hurt my research? What is the unique information? How does this uphold or change your research focus? Should you include it in your paper? Why or why not?
