Personal Journal

A social media or blog post for the public

the book is feminist city by Leslie kern

Topic
A topic is what something is about. Look through your personal journal entries, discussion board posts, or any other writing you’ve done to help you think of some specific ideas, feelings, experiences, arguments, events, etc., you might want to write about. What will the topic(s) of your review be? How will this topic help you achieve the purpose of your review? How will your topic(s) “speak to” (be important or interesting for) your audience? How will you write about this topic in the format you’ve chosen?

Purpose
Our book reviews will a kind of intentional writing – this means you are writing for a reason which could be to persuade someone, to express your thoughts or ideas, to summarize or analyze, to spread awareness or knowledge, etc. What will be the purpose of your book review? How will the topic, purpose, and format you’ve chosen help you achieve your goal?

Audience
An intended audience is the specific person, or group of people you have in mind when you’re writing, such as a general audience (anyone interested), a group of scholars, your family, friends, or other close acquaintances, your social media followers, etc. Who will be the intended audience for your book review? Consider the characteristics of your audience (what they are like) – are they college students? young people? a previous generation? Are they likely to agree with you? What (if anything) do they already know about the topic? How will your intended audience influence the topic, purpose, or format of your writing?

Format and Style
Format refers to the norms about the way something is arranged, presented, or how it works. For example, music can come in different formats including a record, a CD, a downloadable file, streaming, etc. Style is the way in which something is written, as opposed to the meaning of what is written. Consider the length of the text, how formal or casual your writing will be, what vocabulary you’ll use or avoid (including words a Sociologist might use and/or popular or slang terms), whether you’ll write in a personal way that includes your own thoughts and feelings, or whether you’ll be “objective” (objective can be a problematic idea because all knowledge comes from somewhere. However, you might try to make your writing more “universal” meaning that you might choose a style that you think speaks to many people about what we have in common. Hint: it’s not just white men who get to define what we have in common) What format and style will you choose? How will you explain or express your topic, and achieve your purpose using this style? Why is this format and style the one you’ve chosen for your audience?
