Case Study Three – Mr. Nielsen
Dent 202- Oral Hygiene and Risk Factor Assignment
Mr. Lyle Nielson, a 67-year-old male, presents to the SAIT Dental clinic for a preventive procedures appointment. He has been a patient of both the SAIT Dental Clinic and Dr. Tooth for the past 15 years. However, it has been 18 months since his last visit to either clinic. His wife died about 6 months ago; he is slowly coping and getting back to his normal routine.
Mr. Nielsen tries to brush and floss daily, but finds it difficult and has trouble using floss due to limited dexterity in his hands. He is able to grasp a regular toothbrush and does not have the financial means, at this time, to purchase an electric toothbrush. He is using a very large toothbrush with soft bristles which does not fit properly in the posterior regions of his mouth. He uses his toothbrush in a circular motion, often missing the cervical regions.
You note abundant plaque biofilm and material alba along the cervical third of all teeth. He has generalized recession and large embrasure spaces throughout his mouth. Mr. Nielsen finds his gums often bleed when he brushes and flosses. Mr. Nielsen uses fluoridated toothpaste.
Mr. Nielsen’s pocket depths range from 2-5 mm in depth. There is generalized bleeding upon probing in the posterior areas of his mouth. Mr. Nielsen has numerous old occlusal and interproximal restorations in his mouth and the dentist notes 3 new areas of recurrent decay. He has porcelain fused to metal crowns on teeth 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.6 and 4.6. His wisdom teeth were removed over forty years ago, as there was not enough space for them to erupt. All other teeth are present and no tooth mobility is present.
Mr. Nielsen has mild arthritis in his hands which is causing him to lose some of his dexterity when using a toothbrush or floss. Occasionally, he takes an anti-inflammatory such as Advil, for pain associated with his arthritis. Mr. Nielsen is a non-smoker.
Mr. Nielsen tries to maintain a balanced diet but sometimes finds it hard cooking for one. He has a bit of a sweet tooth and likes to snack on cookies and candies in the evening while watching TV.
Oral Hygiene and Risk Factor Assignment – Weight: 10%
Student Name: ________________ Student ID: _______________ Group: ________
In your DENT 202 Preventive Procedures 1 Course, you have been introduced to risk factors for the oral diseases: dental caries and periodontal disease. You will be learning about several different preventive procedures, including oral hygiene instruction, to aid in the prevention of such oral diseases. This assignment allows you to draw on the materials introduced in this course, and to demonstrate your understanding of oral disease risk factors and oral hygiene instruction required to improve and maintain an individual’s oral health.
The aim of the assignment is to identify and describe case-specific risk factors for dental caries and periodontal disease, and to develop an individualized oral hygiene instruction strategy aimed at reducing both oral diseases.
You will be assigned an oral hygiene case study. Your individual case study will be found in the DENT 202 Brightspace site found under “Assignments” – Oral Hygiene and Risk Factor Assignment.
After thoroughly reviewing your assigned case profile, identify the risk factors that may increase the patient’s risk for dental caries and periodontal disease.
You will then gather information (research) to substantiate the risk factors you have identified from the following sources:
DENT 202 course materials
Scholarly Internet resources
Design the presentation of your research in an essay format. The essay should be a maximum 1000 words (excluding title page and references).
Your essay should answer the following questions:
Why is it important for you as a dental assistant to be able to identify and understand the risk factors for dental caries and periodontal disease?
What are the risk factors you have identified and how/why do they increase the patient’s risk for each oral disease?
What individualized oral hygiene recommendations would you give your patient to help them reduce their risk? Provide explanations for why you have made these recommendations.
Your research should include a minimum of 5 credible resources to a maximum of 10. You will be required to use more than your DENT 202 course materials.
