INSTRUCTIONS TO THEORY OF WRITING ESSAY
You have written in a variety of genres and with a variety of different writerly challenges all semester long. Now, it is time to show how all of your hard work has added up and to reflect on your growth as a writer. In essence, this final essay is a reflection of what you have learned about writing.
For this essay, you will write about your growth as a writer, reader, and critical thinker in this course. In 800-2,000 words, you will answer the question, “How have I met the course goals for English 5?” The purpose of the essay should be to reflect on the course goals (listed in the syllabus) and explain how you achieved each one. You must write about each of the four goals and use specific examples from your writing this semester (this can include any stage of your portfolio projects, peer review drafts, self-assessments, class discussions, journal entries) to support your claim. Overall, I want you to write about your own writing to persuade a professional audience that you have met the course goals. I also want to know what you believe writing means; hence, your theory of writing.
Start revising your essays for the portfolio as soon as possible. What specific learning outcomes do you see
at play in the ePortfolio itself and your preparation for it?
Which learning outcome ties most closely to each of the portfolio projects? For example, did Portfolio
Project #1 or #3 teaches you more about the politics of language (Goal #2)?
What trends do you see in your writing?
What are the most significant differences between the rough drafts of your papers and the final drafts?
What did you expect to learn in this class? What have you actually learned about reading, writing, and/or research during this class? What do you still need to learn about reading, writing, or research?
How can you use the information from this class in a future class or in your future workplace?
