Your paper should progress through four parts. You do not need to answer all of these questions, but you should try to think through as many of them as possible before formulating your own analysis. There are many right answers and many ways to analyze the texts well.
1. Source I: “The Epistle to Diognetus” (approximately 1 page).
a. What is going on in this text? Judging from the text alone, what can you discern about the author and the audience? What images and ideas order the text? What social relationships, ethical values or religious practices are implied in it? What assumptions does the author make? What problems is the author addressing by writing the text? What questions does it raise for the historian?
b. Which historical contexts best illuminate the text? What religious phenomena, cultural elements, or historical events from early Christianity provide the key to understanding this primary document? Which portions of the text most resonate with this context? Is there one relevant context or more than one? Which primary sources from our syllabus help you to reconstruct this context (or contexts)?
