English: Characteristics of slavery life: Read the reading for this module (Reyita Chapter 1 – up to page 59) and the lecture for this module.
The lecture is an “interactive” text that has questions posed throughout the text, so you can take notes while you read, and prepare your post while you read.
Write down the questions in your notes, and prepare answers to the questions, to prepare for your discussion board post.
I don’t expect you to get all of the questions “right.” This is not a quiz! It’s simply a guide to help you read Life of Reita.
I am looking for your “involvement” with the text.
I am looking for you to participate as you would in class.
I will reply to your posts to guide you and the class in the direction needed to grasp the important concepts: internal colonization and testimonio characteristics.
You will not be graded on how you answered the questions correctly, only on trying to answer all of the questions to the best of your ability, minimum of 200 words, one question to the class – following the rubric for the discussion board.
Good luck 🙂
Trace the steps of Reyita’s grandmother (Tatica/ Antonina). Retrace her journey from home to the Caribbean.
What are some characteristics of slavery life in Cuba. Based on what you have read.
Find examples for examples of internal colonization. When you find an example, state what is the colonizing principle that is internalized. focus on p. 32, p.41. p. 57-58
What types of literature and scholarship were mentioned in the first class lecture on the “Mapping the Caribbean”?
In Reyita, who tells the story? And who writes the story? So, what makes this text a “testimonio”?
Based on what you learned about a testimonio in the lecture, what makes a testimonio different from a biography or an autobiography?
What could be Reyita’s political purpose? What issues might she want to raise in our consciousness?
Find examples of each characteristic below, in Chapter 1.
There is an “I” subject/ narrator that can be considered as “we”; representing a group; representative of a collective memory and collective identity. In Reyita, what group would be? There could be more than one group.
Story-telling – there are a lot of expressions one would hear in conversation; colloquialisms; popular oral discourse. Can you find some examples in the reading for this—in Chapter 1? What are some examples that show you this is a person speaking; examples of popular expressions; etc.
A Testimonio tells the truth, in the sense that it exposes and denounces a present situation of oppression; and exploitation. What situations of oppression does Reyita expose in Chapter 1?
Proposes possibilities for a new future. Do you see any expression of hope in the text in Chapter 1 so far?
In your discussion board post, answer all of the questions posed in the lecture.
Be sure to reference the reading AT LEAST THREE TIMES (include page numbers; or explain the examples in detail), so that we all know what you are referring to in the book.
You may answer some questions more at length than others.
Include a minimum of 200 words in your post.
Do not make references to your personal life, do not make generic or judgemental comments about the characters in the book – keep the comments focused on thinking critically about the text.
