Writing Assignment:
Using your best writing skills, and using the thesis and structure concepts we have been practicing this session, your final assignment is to write 750-850 words that reflect what you’ve learned and the value of taking this course. 
This assignment is worth 50 points. You will write a 750-850 word essay to reflect on our class. Include responses to the following questions:
1.Did you learn what you thought you would?
2.What did you learn here that is not what you expected?
3.What do you think is most valuable about this class?

Submit through the Learning Module on Blackboard on or before Check the schedule on Blackboard (2 p.m. Central).

Additional Information:
1.Use the five-paragraph essay structure.
2.Use MLA format.
3.Have a clear and properly placed thesis. Make sure to address, in your thesis, all parts of the question asked.
4.Take the three questions asked and turn them into a single thesis statement…a single statement, not questions. (It is called a thesis statement, not thesis questions.) There are three parts, so how many body paragraphs will you have?  Yes. Three. One for each question asked. Remember, the thesis should not give the answers to the questions but rather set up the main ideas themselves, as a thesis usually does. The actual answers to the questions will come in the body paragraphs. Right? (I cannot stress this enough. It happens every time…at least a few of you will not get this…so, re-read what I just said a time or two.)
5.Use topic sentences to set up main ideas for the body paragraphs and connect to the thesis.
6.I don’t expect you to just gush about this course, but I do expect you to be fair. If you had scheduling problems or personal issues that caused you to be late or not do things to your best ability, then please, do not blame the course.
7.Stay in the word range. 750-850 words.
8.This is a personal response and so the first person is correct.
9.Make sure to close or transition each body paragraph appropriately AND start closing by first recapping the thesis—new sentence but same ideas.
10.One thing I want to remind everyone about from an earlier Learning Module is the difference between MLA FORMAT vs. the STRUCTURE vs. the Essay Types. I point this out because some students include something about these things in this essay. Do you need to? No. It is not required at all. But, sometimes one of these things will answer one of the questions asked for a student.
11.MLA FORMAT vs. the STRUCTURE vs. the Essay Types:
A. MLA format is a way of setting up the appearance of a paper and documenting sources. APA and Turabian/Turabian are the other two of the three main formats.  The point is that if you can do one well, then you can easily learn to do others when it is required of you in other courses. English uses MLA, so that is what this course and 99% of English courses will use. Psychology, for example, 99% of the time, will use APA, and history usually uses Turabian/Chicago.  

B. The five-paragraph essay structure is how we organize the paper’s contents. It is called the five-paragraph essay structure because that is the standard situation, however, this structure can expand or contract depending on the situation. A quick in-class essay or a timed essay might only have three total paragraphs. However many body paragraphs the thesis sets up for is how many body paragraphs the composition will have. *Take note of our Essay 4—it set up for four body paragraphs. You are free to experiment with this structure depending on the circumstances. Time and space will often help determine the number of body paragraphs, but so do other things like the points you’re required to cover. Essay 5 has three questions asked and so three body paragraphs is a logical structure.
C. The essay types demonstrate different purposes in writing those papers–purposes that you may need to use in other classes or in your job–analyzing what you’ve read, for example, or arguing a position. ***N.B. Essay 5 requires five total paragraphs because three questions are asked.
12.MLA never uses graphs, charts, bullet points, or visual aids of any kind.
13.GIEW items.
14.Submit your essay through the corresponding Learning Module on or before the due date/time.
15.N.B. You may not get a graded essay back. Many times people do not give me their best work because they have already determined the grade they are willing to earn. Thus, some of you may get comments back on the essay and some of you may not. It’s a case-by-case basis.
