Answer each question in an essay of approximately 550-750 words for each essay
question you answer. Each essay will count as 50 points for a total of 100 points for
the entire test. Be sure to read the questions carefully. You can compose your essay in
any format or style you wish but be sure to address the particular issues raised in each
of the essay questions. Include details regarding significant people and events as
necessary. Use the additional pages provided below the questions to type in your
answers. Each page can accommodate 500 words, single-spaced in 12 pt. font, but you
can use the hard return to give yourself more space. Give Specific citations from the

1. Discuss the career of Octavian from the time he took the title Augustus’ (27BCE)
until his death (14CE). How did he portray himself in his autobiography? Did he
restore the republic’? How did he manipulate the institutions of the Roman
republic to achieve sole power? What was his policy towards the military? What
was his imperial policy? What message did he try to convey to the Roman world
in both his official acts and in his patronage of the arts, architecture, and
literature? How did he use religion to further bolster his regime? Who were
some of the more significant writers of the era and how did these authors help
promote the propaganda program of Augustus?
2. Discuss the relations between the Christians and the pagan Romans and/or
the Roman state from the first century until the reign of Constantine. Why did
pagan people and the Roman state persecute the Christians? What were
Christian attitudes towards the Roman state and paganism? Towards classical
philosophy? Did the attitudes of both parties change over time and, if so, how
and why? Discuss the relationship between the Christian church and the Roman
government after the reign of Constantine. What were the major doctrinal
disputes of this period and what role did the Roman emperor play in these
controversies? According to the Theodosian Code, what were some of the
benefits granted to the Christian church by the Roman government? What was
